Description
Category: Human Milk Fortifier
Description of product: • The human milk fortifier is made from a mixture of cows ‘milk proteins (40% whey, 45% casein) and amino acids (15%) and has been demonstrated to be appropriate to achieve a plasma amino acid profile similar to that of normal infants fed exclusively on human milk.
• Supplementation with both calcium and phosphorus results in normalization of the biochemical indexes of mineral status
• If the baby is on direct breast feeds at the name of discharge, HMF fortification is
usually discontinued as it interferes with direct breast feeds.
• AAP recommends to fortify human milk for infants<1500gm as human milk alone does not fulfill the nutritional demand of preterm and vlbw babies • Osmolality remains within safe limits. • Osmolality” refers to the concentration of dissolved particles of chemicals and minerals — such as sodium and other electrolytes — in your blood. Higher osmolality means certain particles are more concentrated. Lower osmolality means they’re more diluted • Rise of Osmolality observed can be explained by the fact that polysaccharides present in HMF, are broken into constituent mono and oligosaccharides. So we expect an ideal fortifier to alter Osmolality to minimum. The Cochrane review, on the basis of the small number of infants for whom this outcome was reported, showed a non-significant trend toward an increased risk of feed intolerance in treated infants (RR2.85, 95% CI 0.62 to 13.1) • HMF fortification is usually discontinued as it interferes with direct breast feeds. If baby is on expressed breast milk, then HMF should be continued till baby achieves its birth percentile on growth charts. Conventionally in such cases HMF is continued till 40 weeks.
